A body worn camera is essentially a compact, rugged video recorder with a wide-angle lens, built-in microphone, battery, and internal storage all housed in a weatherproof body that can withstand the physical demands of fieldwork.
Recording Modes Most body worn cameras offer two recording modes. In continuous mode, the camera records non-stop from the moment it is switched on until the battery runs out or storage fills up. In event-triggered mode, the officer or security guard manually presses a button to start recording when an incident occurs. Many professional models include a pre-event buffer the camera continuously records the last 30 to 120 seconds in a loop even when in standby, so when the record button is pressed, the footage includes what happened just before the trigger. This is critical in law enforcement and security applications where incidents often begin before anyone realises something is happening.
Storage Body worn cameras store footage internally typically on built-in flash storage ranging from 32GB to 256GB depending on the model. At standard definition, 32GB stores approximately 8–10 hours of footage. At HD resolution, the same storage holds approximately 4–6 hours. Many models support expandable storage via microSD cards.
Data Transfer and Evidence Management After a shift, footage is transferred from the camera to a computer or a centralised evidence management system via USB or a dedicated docking station. Professional-grade body worn cameras include tamper-evident file systems meaning footage cannot be deleted, edited, or modified after recording without leaving a traceable audit log. This chain-of-custody integrity is essential for footage used as legal evidence.
GPS and Timestamp Most field-grade body worn cameras embed GPS coordinates and accurate timestamps directly into every recorded file. This means when footage is played back, you can see exactly where the officer was standing and at what time information that is often crucial in dispute resolution and legal proceedings.
